Local daily news in Prescott: Editorial: Taxpayers might be out of money In what could be a prelude to the May 18 special election to increase Arizona sales taxes, voters in Chino Valley on Tuesday spoke. They are tapped out. The town by a wide margin voiced its opposition to a ballot initiative that would have drawn money out of taxpayers to help support the local struggling education budget. Despite daunting projections of reduced staff, crowded classrooms and the elimination of art, music and physical education classes, voters simply said they wouldn't - or couldn't - contribute any more. Not a good sign for this May's election. The Arizona House and Senate have put it in the hands of voters to dig deeper into their own wallets to boost the state budget. Prop 100, forecasters say, would bring in $3 billion

Yavapai College increases tuition and dorm fees The Yavapai College Governing Board Tuesday approved a $4 per credit hour tuition increase, a 15 percent increase in dorm fees, a 5 percent increase in meal plan fees and an out-of-state tuition increase consistent with increases in general tuition. Student reaction was mixed. "The tuition increase is OK with me," Yavapai College career training student Nolan Akin said. "I understand the economy." Akin, along with Catherine Cuda and Suzy Gerhart, thinks that even with a $4 per credit hour tuition increase, Yavapai College is a "great deal."
